Bodybuilding World Faces Alarming Rise in Sudden Deaths Among Elite Athletes
2021 marked a devastating year for the bodybuilding community as over two dozen professional athletes passed away unexpectedly within a span of 12 months, capturing global attention.
The tragedy struck even the youngest at the age of 27, sparking concerns about the safety of the sport that prides itself on peak physical performance.
A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at the University of Padova in Italy delved into the risk of sudden death among male bodybuilders, shedding light on a concerning trend that demands urgent attention from athletes, medical professionals, and sports organizations.
Tracking more than 20,000 bodybuilders over an average of 8 years, the study revealed 73 cases of sudden death at an average age of 42, with the most common cause being sudden heart failure, accounting for 46 fatalities.
While the overall risk of sudden death for bodybuilders remains relatively low, the study uncovered a startling reality for elite professionals. Their risk of sudden heart failure was found to be over 14 times higher than that of amateur athletes, hinting at the escalating dangers as athletes climb the ranks.

The study also honed in on participants in the prestigious Mr. Olympia ‘open’ category, revealing a disturbingly high death rate among the top 100 competitors. Seven sudden deaths, five of which were cases of sudden cardiac death, occurred at an average age of 36, prompting urgent calls for preventive measures.
Lead researcher Marco Vecchiato emphasized the need for specific recommendations to safeguard bodybuilders from sudden cardiac death, pointing to extreme training, strict dietary regimes, and frequent use of performance-enhancing drugs as potential contributors to cardiovascular strain and structural heart changes.

Vecchiato stressed the importance of prioritizing health over extreme body transformations, urging medical associations to collaborate with federations and policymakers to promote safer practices in bodybuilding.
The study, published in the European Heart Journal, marks a pivotal moment for the bodybuilding community to address the pressing issue of sudden deaths among elite athletes.
