Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence wins Michigan battleground House primary

William Lawrence, co-founder of the Progressive Sunrise Movement, has secured the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Representative Tom Barrett in a competitive Michigan House district.

Lawrence’s upcoming campaign will serve as a significant test for progressive candidates in closely contested areas, as former President Donald Trump narrowly won this Lansing-based district by one percentage point in 2024.

Republicans now face their preferred opponent in Lawrence for the November election. A GOP-affiliated group invested heavily in last-minute advertisements to boost his candidacy, adhering to their strategy of supporting more left-leaning candidates who can be portrayed as disconnected from mainstream views.

During the primary, Lawrence focused on criticizing data center development and gained support through endorsements from prominent progressives like Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Ro Khanna (D-Calif.).

Lawrence’s success in Michigan’s 7th District—which is pivotal for determining the House majority—was aided by a split vote among his two more moderate opponents.

Matt Maasdam, a former Navy SEAL, and Bridget Brink, a former Ambassador to Ukraine, cautioned that Lawrence’s nomination could complicate the Democrats’ efforts to win this crucial seat in November. They pointed to the Republican-linked group that supported Lawrence. Despite these warnings, Democratic voters chose Lawrence as their candidate.
