Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest film, “Superman,” soared to the top of the box office charts in its debut weekend, flexing its solid box office muscle. The success of the film was celebrated by Warner Bros. Discovery boss, David Zaslav, who took an early victory lap over the Man of Steel’s impressive performance. Meanwhile, music superstar Rihanna made a fashionable late entrance to Sunday’s premiere of “Smurfs” with her two young sons in tow.

These exciting stories are featured in the latest episode of “Daily Variety,” a new podcast that showcases conversations with journalists from Variety, discussing the latest news, trends, and personalities in the media and entertainment industry.

Rebecca Rubin, Variety’s box office expert, shared her insights on the performance of “Superman” and highlighted some surprising regional trends in its box office success.

“The top 10 markets for ‘Superman’ were fairly standard, with cities like L.A., New York, Dallas, Chicago, and San Francisco leading the way. However, what caught my eye were the two theaters in Florida, one in Orlando and one in Miami, as well as one theater in Atlanta that made it into the top 10 locations,” Rubin explained. “It was interesting to see these Southern venues among the highest grossing, showing that the film played well across the country.”

Clayton Davis, Variety’s chief awards editor, shared his predictions for the upcoming Emmy nominations, focusing on whether Noah Wyle of “The Pitt” will receive a nomination. Wyle, known for his work on NBC’s “ER,” last received an Emmy nomination 26 years ago. Davis believes that “The Pitt” could be a dark horse contender for the drama series category.
