On Tuesday morning, approximately 50 volunteers ventured out to check on residents in the hardest-hit areas. While the number of people without power has decreased to fewer than 500, the council remains cautious about the fragile state of the electricity network. A recent vegetation fire in Balclutha prompted a reminder from the council to avoid lighting fires or jeopardizing vital infrastructure.
The council has implemented a permit system for outdoor fires due to the low water levels in many reservoirs across the district. Special measures are being taken, such as deploying water tanks at schools and addressing leaks in various water schemes. Balclutha, Milton, and Kaitangata are the only areas without a boil water notice, but residents are advised not to consume discolored water.
For farming families in need of assistance, the Rural Support Trust is available online or via phone at 0800 787 254. The community continues to rally together to provide much-needed support during these challenging times.
