Surfer Jamie Mitchell, known as one of the top athletes in surfing, faced a frightening accident while catching waves in Hawaii this week, leading to severe cuts on his face, throat, and head.
The 48-year-old Mitchell recounted the incident in an Instagram video, explaining that he was struck by the fins of his board while surfing one of his preferred spots on Tuesday.
The Australian athlete shared graphic images of his injuries prior to receiving treatment, which are quite shocking. You can view the full set of images at your leisure.
“I got pretty banged up,” he remarked.
“They put something like 18 staples in the back of my head, 15 stitches in my throat, five in my cheekbone, and a few more elsewhere, but I’m going to be alright,” he added.
Mitchell, who has won the Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championship ten times, expressed gratitude to the bystanders who assisted him in reaching the shore, along with the Kahuku Emergency team for their medical support.
On Thursday, Mitchell uploaded a follow-up video updating fans on his recovery, sharing that he is improving and showing no signs of infection.
“I feel very fortunate,” he expressed.
