Survivors of a Christian cult in Kenya are still grappling with the trauma of the horrific massacre that took place at the Good News International Church. The cult’s leader, Paul Mackenzie, convinced hundreds of his followers to starve themselves to death in anticipation of the end of the world.

The gruesome discovery of 436 bodies in a mass grave at the church’s compound shocked the nation. Mackenzie, who was known for performing miracles and exorcisms, now faces charges for the murder of 191 children and multiple counts of manslaughter.

Mackenzie, a former street vendor turned preacher, gained a following for his charismatic personality and supposed ability to share wealth with his followers. However, his teachings took a dark turn as he opposed formal education and vaccinations, eventually leading his congregation to a remote forest area in Shakahola.

In Shakahola, Mackenzie established his own mini-state, complete with villages named after biblical locations. He demanded extreme loyalty from his followers, going as far as instructing children to fast until death. The harrowing accounts of starvation and abuse that survivors shared shed light on the horrors that took place in the secluded compound.

Despite the atrocities committed by Mackenzie and his followers, he continues to show no remorse for his actions. The community is still reeling from the loss of loved ones and the trauma inflicted by the cult leader.

As investigations into the massacre continue, more mass graves are expected to be uncovered, further revealing the extent of the tragedy. The survivors’ accounts serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of blind faith and the devastating consequences of unchecked power.

The horrific events that transpired at the Good News International Church have left a scar on the community, but they also serve as a cautionary tale about the dangers of manipulation and extremism in religious settings. The survivors’ bravery in coming forward and sharing their stories is a testament to their resilience in the face of unimaginable trauma.
