Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of murdering Charlie Kirk earlier this month, faced his second court hearing today, which we streamed live.
In an unexpected twist of courtroom etiquette, Robinson chose to attend the Provo court hearing remotely, dialing in from Utah County Jail instead of putting in a physical appearance. Surprisingly, he remained silent throughout the proceedings.
Robinson’s appointed attorney, Kathryn N. Nester, appeared before the judge today. The state of Utah stepped in to provide legal representation for Robinson, as he was deemed unable to afford his own lawyer.
During the hearing, Nester and the prosecution discussed the procedural steps for introducing evidence in Robinson’s case. Fortunately, the two parties reached a consensus, as reported by CourtTV.
The next preliminary hearing is set for October 30, which will hopefully allow Robinson to physically attend court and grace the proceedings with his presence.
As for Robinson’s no-show in person, it might be attributed to potential security concerns; after all, the backlash against him has generated significant public outrage. In fact, it was the defense’s request to hold a virtual appearance for him.
Kirk was tragically shot and killed on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, UT earlier this month. Following an extensive manhunt, authorities apprehended Tyler Robinson.
Robinson allegedly confessed to the crime to his father, who in turn relayed the information to a youth pastor working with U.S. Marshals. Robinson later turned himself in at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office around 10 PM on September 11, the day following the tragic event.
Utah County has charged Robinson with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm leading to serious injury, and obstruction of justice. He had notably appeared via video call shortly after the shooting, showing an unsettling lack of emotion as charges were read.
Kirk’s premature death has ignited a wave of national sorrow, with President Donald Trump calling for flags to be flown at half-staff following the tragedy. This incident has prompted bipartisan condemnation of political violence, with prosecutors indicating they may pursue the death penalty against Robinson if a conviction occurs.
