Production has officially commenced on “S.W.A.T: Exiles,” the new spinoff series that brings back Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson.

Produced by Sony Pictures Television in Los Angeles, the series retains the same production team that worked on the original CBS program. This announcement precedes Sony’s participation at Mipcom in Cannes, where the studio plans to feature the new series alongside its array of scripted and unscripted shows.

“Get ready for ‘S.W.A.T.’ 2.0!” exclaimed Moore. “After eight remarkable years of overcoming challenges and entertaining audiences, we’re about to elevate the franchise to new heights—bigger, better, and more exciting. With an invigorated cast and a bolder, darker Hondo, we’re excited to share the story we’ve crafted together. A huge thanks to our fans and Sony for keeping this journey alive; you won’t want to miss what’s coming next!”

Joining Moore in the cast of this new series are Lucy Barrett, Adain Bradley, Zyra Gorecki, Freddy Miyares, and Ronen Rubinstein. Notable stars from “S.W.A.T.”, Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit, will make guest appearances in the “Exiles” pilot episode.

“It’s been electrifying to be back on set,” stated showrunner Jason Ning. “You can feel the shift in creative energy. We’re paying tribute to what made ‘S.W.A.T.’ special while reinventing it with a more character-focused approach. The new cast is eager, the crew is at the top of their game, and ‘Exiles’ already has its own unique rhythm.”

The official logline for “Exiles” is as follows:

“Following a high-stakes mission that takes a turn for the worse, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson (Moore) is pulled from forced retirement to head an experimental SWAT unit comprised of unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge the gap between generations, manage conflicting personalities, and transform a group of outsiders into a cohesive team capable of safeguarding the city and preserving the program that shaped him.”

Ning will serve as the showrunner and executive producer, alongside Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, as well as Moore, James Scura, and Jon Cowan. Sony Pictures Television is at the helm of producing and globally distributing the 10-episode series.

The reboot of “S.W.A.T.” premiered on CBS in 2017. Initially, the broadcast network canceled the show after its sixth season, only to reverse its decision and announce a return for a seventh and final season. Subsequently, the show received a reprieve for an eighth season, before facing another cancellation in March.
