A Chicago Man Faces Multiple Charges After Hours-Long Standoff with SWAT
A Chicago man, Larry Hochmuth, is facing serious felony charges after allegedly firing a handgun at an armored SWAT vehicle during an intense standoff that began with a domestic dispute. The incident unfolded late on January 31 and continued into the following day, culminating in Hochmuth’s arrest after barricading himself inside a bedroom. Court documents reveal the harrowing details of the confrontation.
Hochmuth, 45, has been charged with eight counts of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer. The girlfriend of 25 years reported that upon returning home, she found Hochmuth drinking alcohol and agitated. Following an argument, she retreated to an upstairs bedroom while Hochmuth remained downstairs. Gunshots were heard coming from the back porch, with Hochmuth allegedly firing a 9mm handgun with an American flag design towards her feet and into the ceiling, accusing her of not loving him anymore.
As the situation escalated, Hochmuth allegedly pushed his girlfriend and then handed her the gun, which she unloaded before fleeing the residence. Despite initial reluctance to provide full details to authorities, she eventually disclosed the incident out of fear for Hochmuth’s behavior.
Uniformed Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers responded to the scene but were unable to make contact with Hochmuth. SWAT was then called in as the standoff intensified. Hochmuth reportedly made threats to harm himself and police if they attempted to enter the home.
Amidst the standoff, Hochmuth fired a shot at the armored SWAT vehicle, narrowly missing officers. Police used drones for surveillance while SWAT officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. Multiple attempts to coax Hochmuth out peacefully were unsuccessful.
SWAT officers eventually breached the barricaded door and found Hochmuth in a bedroom, where he attempted to fortify the barricade with furniture. After confirming that he was unarmed, officers safely took him into custody.
Remarkably, no shots were fired by law enforcement throughout the entirety of the standoff. Police discovered additional firearms in the residence, including the weapon used by Hochmuth during the confrontation.
Evidence collected at the scene, including spent shell casings, corroborated the girlfriend’s account of the events. Hochmuth now faces severe charges as a result of his actions during the standoff.
