World Softest Productions is currently developing a new series titled “Taiwan Travelogue,” based on the award-winning novel by Taiwanese writer Yang Shuang-zi. The story delves into the intricate relationship between two women set against the backdrop of Japanese colonial rule in 1938 Taiwan.
The series, which is in the script development stage, has been selected for the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF). It follows the journey of Japanese writer Aoyama Chizuko, who travels to Taiwan to escape the pressures of an impending marriage and to deliver lectures. During her time in Taiwan, she encounters Ō Chizuru, a local interpreter who becomes her indispensable guide to understanding the culture and society of Taiwan. Their relationship unravels the complexities of colonial power dynamics.
Executive producer and producer Chen Yu Chang, who is also the director general of World Softest Productions, highlights the unique dynamic between the two female leads. Chizuko is portrayed as outspoken and driven by a strong sense of justice, while Chizuru conceals her emotions and true feelings beneath a composed exterior.
The narrative explores how the bond between the two women deepens through shared experiences of food and culture. However, their relationship is tested by the barriers of language, power dynamics, and identity. As Chizuko attempts to protect Chizuru from her own perspective, she inadvertently undermines Chizuru’s sense of dignity. This conflict forces Chizuru to confront Chizuko, revealing the disparity between the idealized version of herself that Chizuko sees and her true identity.
The production boasts a collaborative team of Japanese-Taiwanese talents, including executive producer Jayde Lin and Japanese producer Maehata Sachiko. Japanese screenwriter Yoshida Erika, known for her work on popular series like “Cherry Magic!” and “The Tiger and Her Wings,” is handling the adaptation.
Chang emphasizes that the themes of the story transcend its historical setting, resonating with contemporary issues of cultural differences, identity, and power dynamics. The series is scheduled to commence filming in 2026 across various locations in Japan and Taiwan, with an anticipated release in Q4 of 2027.
At TCCF, World Softest Productions is seeking sales partners and distribution platforms for the project, aiming to reach a global audience with its emotionally resonant storytelling. Chang’s track record of producing acclaimed documentaries and streaming shows underscores the potential of “Taiwan Travelogue” to make a significant impact in the entertainment industry.
