Prime Video to Premiere Takeshi Kitano’s “Broken Rage” Globally in February
Prime Video has announced the upcoming global premiere of “Broken Rage,” the latest film from renowned Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano. The highly anticipated feature is set to debut on the streaming platform on February 13th.
“Broken Rage” is a genre-hybrid project that showcases Kitano’s unique filmmaking style. The movie is divided into two distinct segments, with the first half delivering a gritty crime thriller following a hitman caught in the middle of law enforcement and yakuza forces. The second half takes a comedic approach, reimagining the same narrative through self-parody techniques.
The film boasts a stellar cast led by Golden Globe winner Tadanobu Asano, who reunites with Kitano for the third time after their collaborations on “Zatōichi” (2003) and “Kubi” (2023). Also joining the cast is Nao Omori, a familiar face in Kitano projects with roles in films like “Dolls” (2002) and “Outrage Coda” (2017).
Other notable cast members include Shidō Nakamura, Hakuryu, Takashi Nishina, Shohei Uno, Shoken Kunimoto, and more. “Broken Rage” also introduces new comedic talent to Kitano’s repertoire, with Gekidan Hitori, Masanori Hasegawa, Azusa Babazono, and Mogura Suzuki making their debut in the film.
Described by Kitano as an “experimental endeavor,” “Broken Rage” delves into the filmmaker’s interest in blending comedy with violence. The film made waves at the Venice Film Festival 2024 with an Out of Competition screening, marking a milestone as the first Japanese streaming-exclusive production to receive an official selection at the prestigious festival.
Following its festival debut, “Broken Rage” will be available for streaming in over 240 countries and territories worldwide on Prime Video. The release is part of the platform’s ongoing commitment to original international content.
