During a recent thunderstorm in Taranaki, residents faced challenges as water inundated garages and flooded streets. Taryn Utiger from Ōkato described the situation as everyone “battening down the hatches” as up to 280mm of rain fell over the region in 24 hours, leading to flash flooding, slips, and sewage overflows.

Utiger shared her experience of shin-deep water covering furniture in her garages, causing damage and inconvenience. Similarly, Hendrik Hofstee in Egmont Village had ankle-deep water rush through his workshop, prompting quick action to prevent further damage.

With State Highway 3 experiencing deep flooding and road closures due to slips, Taranaki Emergency Management / Civil Defence advised caution and encouraged people to avoid unnecessary travel. MetService forecasted more thunderstorms, prompting residents to stay vigilant and prepared for possible heavy rainfall.

The council also issued warnings about sewage overflows affecting public health in various locations, advising against swimming or collecting food near the contaminated areas.

Despite the challenges faced during the thunderstorm, residents remained resilient and cooperative in dealing with the aftermath and ensuring safety in the community.
