Target Corp. recently announced the opening of a state-of-the-art food distribution center in Thornton, Colorado, at a cost of $367 million. This facility will cater to 129 stores across 11 states, ensuring customers have access to fresher food and a wider variety of products. The move is part of Target’s strategy to allocate more space for fresh and frozen food items, aiming to enhance the availability of these products and improve overall distribution efficiency.

In the past three years, Target has been actively expanding its fresh supply chain network, introducing four new food distribution centers to support its growing focus on fresh food offerings. During the first quarter of this year, the retail giant introduced 3,000 new food items, resulting in a sales increase of over 50% compared to the previous assortment. Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester highlighted these achievements during an earnings call, emphasizing the company’s commitment to enhancing its food offerings.

The newly opened 529,000-square foot facility in Colorado boasts temperature-controlled storage, enabling faster replenishment of products to stores. It is the largest among Target’s nine food distribution centers and the first to offer consolidation capabilities. This feature allows for the combination of shipments from various vendors into fully loaded trucks, streamlining transportation and improving efficiency across Target’s network.

Amy Probst, Senior Vice President of Food and Beverage Supply Chain, believes that the new facility will lead to improved in-stock reliability, expanded assortment opportunities, and faster replenishment for stores. Employing over 350 individuals, the Thornton center is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing Target’s food distribution operations.

In addition to the Colorado facility, Target recently appointed Jeff England as its new Chief Supply Chain Officer and opened a $265 million “receive” center in Houston for imported goods. These strategic moves underscore Target’s commitment to elevating its supply chain operations and ensuring inventory reliability.
