A documentary focusing on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has been the subject of speculation, and it is now officially announced as a reality — but it promises to delve deeper than anticipated. On Monday, Swift unveiled that a six-part docuseries titled, “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The End of an Era,” is set to debut on Disney+ on December 12, along with the simultaneous release of a concert film, “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The Final Show,” filmed during the tour’s finale in Vancouver, B.C.

As revealed on “Good Morning America,” the series offers “an intimate glimpse into Taylor’s life as her tour captivated audiences and made headlines worldwide,” featuring insights from “performers, family members, and friends,” including tour opening acts Gracie Abrams and Sabrina Carpenter, along with guests Ed Sheeran and Florence Welch. The first two episodes will be released for streaming on December 12, with an additional two episodes dropping bi-weekly thereafter.

The concert film will premiere alongside the first two installments of the docuseries and represents the first opportunity for fans to witness the additional material from the Eras Tour’s “Tortured Poets Department,” now on the big screen. Swift’s earlier theatrical release of the “Eras Tour” concert film (which also came to Disney+) debuted prior to the album’s release or its songs being included in the tour’s set list.

A teaser trailer, lasting one minute and 39 seconds, was released immediately after the announcement; you can view it below.

“It was the End of an Era and we sensed it,” Swift stated in her social media announcement regarding the projects. “We aimed to cherish every moment leading to the finale of this pivotal and intense chapter in our lives, permitting filmmakers to document the tour and all its intertwined stories as it drew to a close. Moreover, we captured the final show in its entirety.”

“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The End of an Era” is directed by Don Argott, co-directed by Sheena M. Joyce, and produced by Object & Animal. Conversely, “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The Final Show” is directed by Glenn Weiss and produced by Taylor Swift Productions in partnership with Silent House Productions.

The concert movie will showcase the finale of the Eras Tour held at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on December 8, 2023. (Read Variety’s review of that show here.) The setlist for this climactic event of the tour, which grossed $2 billion over nearly two years, included 45 songs and introduced the additional “Female Rage: The Musical Segment” after the release of “The Tortured Poets Department.” Additionally, the surprise song segment featured medleys of “A Place in This World”/”New Romantics” and “Long Live/New Year’s Day.” It’s yet to be confirmed if the concert film will encompass the entire performance lasting over three hours.

Hints about which platforms would host Swift’s upcoming project — now confirmed as a duo of projects — surfaced on Sunday. The logos for Disney+ and Hulu appeared on an Instagram post from “GMA,” teasing a major announcement from Swift on Monday morning. This reveal showcases a robust synergy with the Disney-owned ABC network.

The anticipation of a documentary and/or concert film has lingered among Swifties ever since fans spotted camera crews at the final Eras Tour show in Vancouver, B.C., in December 2023. Earlier in theaters, her concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” had already been screened by that time.

In April 2024, Swift previously released “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” on Disney+ after its record-setting theatrical run. This concert film quickly claimed the title of the highest-grossing concert movie in cinemas in late 2023, and upon its arrival to Disney+, it shattered records for initial streaming, racking up 4.6 million views in its first three days. The decision for the tour film to stream exclusively on Disney+ indicated Swift’s satisfaction with the platform, notably after how they handled her late 2020 documentary “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.” (Swift has previously released concert films and documentaries through Netflix and Apple.)

The forthcoming docuseries and concert film will bypass theaters, a shift from the “Eras Tour” concert movie released two years ago. However, theater owners need not complain, as Swift has provided them with “Taylor Swift: The Release Party of a Showgirl,” an album-release promotional event that topped the box office with a stunning $33 million gross in just three days.

These Eras Tour projects are set to arrive following Swift’s recent box office peak with “Release Party of a Showgirl” and her record-breaking debut atop the Billboard 200 with the album “The Life of a Showgirl.” In merely five days, it exceeded the previous record for an album’s first-week sales, previously held by Adele’s debut album “25” a decade ago.

By announcing via ABC, Swift maintained her long-standing relationship with “Good Morning America” — just a week after showcasing her affiliation with NBC during appearances on Jimmy Fallon’s and Seth Meyers’ late-night talk shows. Ratings revealed “The Tonight Show” achieved its strongest ratings among 18-to-49-year-olds in eight months, while Meyers’ “Late Night” reached its best figures since January.
