Taylor Swift has a remarkable birthday surprise for her fiancé, Travis Kelce — she’s releasing a brand-new music video that centers around the song many believe reflects their relationship!
The pop sensation has just unveiled the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia,” a track where she compares herself to the tragic character from “Hamlet,” giving credit to Kelce for rescuing her.
The video opens in a lavish hotel ballroom featuring a mural depicting Taylor as the tragic Shakespearean figure, guiding viewers through a montage of smoky jazz lounges and cinematic scenes.
In various sequences, Swift battles pirates on the deck of a ship, wears a vintage swim cap, and even finds herself submerged in a bathtub, with water nearly engulfing her face. Ophelia, known for her tragic end in “Hamlet,” famously takes her own life—though we suppose “Hamlet” being published in 1623 negates the need for a spoiler alert.
Please wait while we prepare the Instagram Media.
Swift—a writer and director of the music video, by the way—shared behind-the-scenes snapshots from the shoot, explaining that each section was filmed in a single take, despite the transitions between scenes.
Taylor elaborated in her caption, “I aimed for each continuous scene to evoke the sensation of a live performance, reminding us how it felt to be part of those moments together. It’s a stroll through the tumultuous landscape of showbiz.”
‘TFOO’ is clearly a reflection on Taylor’s journey with Travis, especially following the aftermath of her breakup with Joe Alwyn, featuring poignant lyrics like, “Late one night/You dug me out of my grave and/ Saved my heart from the fate of/ Ophelia (Ophëlia).”
In her appearance on “New Heights” this past August, Taylor humorously remarked to Jason Kelce that she needed to elucidate the song’s references to Travis, joking that he likely never read “Hamlet” during his school years.
The album “The Life of a Showgirl” launched on Friday, with fans busy dissecting the lyrics—from the provocative lines in “Wood,” discussing Kelce’s “redwood tree”, to comments that may target Charli XCX, Travis’ previous girlfriend Kayla Nicole, and even her former friend Blake Lively.
We have no doubt that Swifties will adore this music video … but what are your thoughts—cast your vote in our poll and share your opinion on the fate of this song!
