TCL Unveils Nxtpaper Series: A New Approach to E-Reading on Smartphones

We’re all guilty of spending way too much time staring at our phone screens, but TCL is aiming to make that experience a little easier on the eyes with their new Nxtpaper series. The latest models, the TCL 50 and 50 Pro Nxtpaper 5, come equipped with a unique feature – a dedicated “Nxtpaper key” that allows users to switch the screen into a monochrome reader mode with just the press of a button.

The switch has two positions – the first activates the Ink Paper Mode, while the second enables “Max Ink Mode,” turning off notifications to transform the phone into an e-reader. While the name might suggest otherwise, the Nxtpaper screens are not full e-ink displays, but rather LCD technology with anti-glare coatings and enhanced contrast. They offer a middle ground between traditional screens and e-ink devices.

In addition to the Nxtpaper key, the TCL 50 Nxtpaper 5 and 50 Pro models also feature an Eye Care Assistant that adjusts the screen based on ambient light and offers recommendations to reduce eye strain. The Night Light mode automatically adjusts brightness and turns on the rear flash LED for ambient lighting. TCL claims that in maximum reader mode, the phones can achieve seven days of battery life and 28 days of standby time.

Apart from the innovative display features, the phones boast impressive specifications such as 1080p screens with 120Hz support, MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processors, 8GB of RAM with expandable virtual memory, a 5010mAh battery with 33-watt fast charging, and triple rear cameras. The standard model offers an 8MP front camera and 256GB of storage, while the Pro variant upgrades to a 32MP front camera and double the storage capacity. Both phones run on Android 14 with promised updates to Android 16 and software support until 2029.

The TCL 50 Nxtpaper 5 is expected to retail for €229 in Europe, while the Pro model will be priced at €299 and include a case and stylus. The launch dates for these devices have not been announced yet.

Overall, TCL’s Nxtpaper series offers a unique approach to smartphone displays, catering to users who want a more comfortable reading experience without sacrificing the functionality of a traditional smartphone. With its innovative features and competitive pricing, these phones are sure to appeal to tech enthusiasts looking for something different in the crowded smartphone market.
