An award-winning California teacher, Jacqueline Ma, found herself in a heartbreaking situation as she tearfully confessed to sexually abusing two of her students, aged 11 and 12. Ma, who had been recognized as “Teacher of the Year” in San Diego County shortly before her arrest, faced a potential 180-year sentence for the disturbing abuse that took place at Lincoln Acres Elementary School in National City.

However, in a recent court appearance, Ma admitted to engaging in lewd acts with her students as part of a plea deal that could result in a sentence of 30 years to life. Through tears, Ma told the judge, “Guilty,” marking a significant moment in the case.

In addition to the lewd acts, Ma also pleaded guilty to possessing material containing a minor engaged in or simulating sexual conduct. This charge stemmed from her actions of sending explicit images to the boys and pressuring them to reciprocate by sending her photos of themselves engaged in sexual acts.

Deputy District Attorney Drew Heart emphasized the gravity of Ma’s actions, especially considering her position of trust in the community. He stated that the plea deal sends a strong message about the consequences of leveraging trust and good faith to commit such heinous acts against children.

Ma’s arrest in the spring of 2023 came after the mother of one of the victims contacted the authorities. It was revealed that Ma had groomed the 12-year-old boy over a 10-month period, exchanging love letters and explicit texts. She even sent him inappropriate photos of herself and requested videos of him engaging in sexual activities.

Another student, an 11-year-old boy, was also involved in a similar relationship with Ma, exchanging sexually charged messages with her. Shockingly, a picture of one of the victims was found in Ma’s wallet after her arrest, underscoring the severity of her actions.

During a preliminary hearing in 2023, Superior Court Judge Maryann D’Addezio noted that the evidence clearly showed Ma had taken advantage of the children under duress. The prosecution emphasized the importance of charging Ma with sex offenses committed under duress, highlighting the manipulative nature of her actions.

Ma is scheduled to be sentenced on May 9, facing the possibility of spending the next 30 years to life in prison. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of sexual abuse, especially when perpetrated by individuals in positions of trust and authority.
