Teamsters Shift Political Strategy: A New Era of Bipartisan Support

It appears that the Teamsters, under the leadership of General President Sean O’Brien, are not merely eyeing the 2024 elections; they are signaling a profound and possibly enduring shift in their political alignment by opening their wallets to battleground Republicans ahead of the upcoming midterms.

For the second consecutive year, the Teamsters’ political action committee has made a noteworthy donation to the Republicans’ House campaign arm, a departure from nearly two decades of predominantly supporting Democrats. The D.R.I.V.E. committee — which stands for Democrat, Republican, Independent Voter Education — contributed $5,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in the second quarter alone.

In addition to this contribution, the Teamsters have generously distributed a total of $62,000 to approximately two dozen Republican congressional candidates in key battleground districts, including:

  • Rob Bresnahan, Mike Kelly, and Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania
  • Pete Stauber and Tom Emmer from Minnesota
  • Nicole Malliotakis, Andrew Garbarino, Nick LaLota, and Mike Lawler from New York
  • Jefferson Shreve from Indiana
  • Dave Taylor, Bob Latta, Michael Rulli, and Dave Joyce from Ohio
  • Jeff Van Drew and Chris Smith from New Jersey
  • David Rouzer from North Carolina
  • Tom Barrett from Michigan
  • Blake Moore from Utah
  • Darin LaHood and Mike Bost from Illinois
  • Troy Nehls from Texas
  • Vern Buchanan from Florida

Moreover, the Teamsters have also extended their financial support to Republican Senators Deb Fischer of Nebraska, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Jon Husted of Ohio, and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania. Their outreach is not limited to Congress; this past June, they donated $50,000 to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

“Our members are working people whose interests cut across party lines,” stated Kara Deniz, a spokesperson for the Teamsters, in a comment to POLITICO. “There’s no value in living in a bubble where you only engage with certain individuals while excluding others.”

Despite this newfound love for GOP candidates, the Teamsters have not completely abandoned their Democratic roots, having contributed $15,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) as recently as April. However, the increase in Republican donations marks a significant strategic pivot for the influential labor union since 2024, when O’Brien made headlines with a landmark address at the Republican National Convention and began to more seriously court Republican support.

This shift comes as O’Brien actively seeks to broaden the union’s appeal beyond its traditional base, recognizing a growing openness among union members to support Republican candidates. He has even hosted Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy on his podcast and participated in an interview with Bari Weiss from The Free Press.

For Democrats, this trend should serve as a wake-up call; their long-standing labor support, a cornerstone of their political foundation, is increasingly vulnerable, particularly as former President Donald Trump works to reshape the GOP into a party more aligned with working-class interests.

“Labor unions are finally recognizing that their memberships consist of workers across the political spectrum,” noted Bresnahan, a recipient of $5,000 from the Teamsters and a descendant of an IBEW member.

Last year, the Teamsters contributed $25,000 to the NRCC and an impressive $45,000 to the Republican National Committee (RNC) as part of a strategy to diversify their political backing amid a shift in their rank-and-file members toward the right.

“Hard-working men and women across the country are rallying behind Republicans because we advocate for their jobs, families, and future,” stated NRCC spokesperson Mike Marinella. “Democrats have abandoned them with their out-of-touch, radical policies. We are bringing these voters back, and they will be crucial in expanding our House majority.”
