Authorities have reported that a chaotic “pop-up party” fueled by alcohol, which started in Denver and moved to Aurora, ended in a violent altercation and shooting that tragically took the life of a 15-year-old girl in the early hours of Sunday morning.
During a news briefing on Thursday, Aurora Police Department Division Chief Mark Hildebrand revealed that several groups of young individuals joined the event after watching a livestream video on social media.
One of the groups, which included a 14-year-old boy from Colorado Springs, caused a confrontation that escalated into a physical altercation. The boy allegedly fired shots into the crowd, resulting in the tragic loss of life.
Authorities shared a blurred video of the fight leading up to the shooting, emphasizing the disturbing trend of juvenile violence associated with online-promoted gatherings.
Hildebrand expressed concern over the behavior exhibited at such events, mentioning reports of participation in girl fight clubs and emphasizing the unacceptable nature of such actions.
The 14-year-old suspect was apprehended in Colorado Springs on Wednesday for an unrelated motor vehicle theft warrant. Police also seized two handguns from his residence, although it is unclear if these firearms were used in the shooting.
A warrant has been issued for the suspect on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms as a minor. The incident resulted in the death of a young girl, hospitalization of a 20-year-old woman, and minor injuries to another teenager.
The victims were discovered by firefighters near an Aurora Fire Rescue station, prompting Hildebrand to urge parents and schools to be vigilant about the risks associated with such parties, which often involve gang activity and underage substance abuse.
He emphasized the importance of parental awareness and intervention to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
