Nail art has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century in Paris, where the first modern nail parlor was born. This art form has evolved over time, with the Vietnamese nail industry making a significant impact in America after the fall of Saigon. In her new book, “Fresh Sets: Contemporary Nail Art from Around the World,” author Tembe Denton-Hurst explores the transformative history of nail embellishment and showcases 35 standout artists who are thriving in the industry today.

The book begins by highlighting Denton-Hurst’s personal experience of falling in love with manicures as a child in Brooklyn and traces the evolution of nail art through time. From basic sets to contemporary aesthetics, nail art has undergone a radical transformation in the 21st century. The book features 300 vibrant images that showcase the ongoing innovations in nail art, from birthday candle pedicures to maximalist jeweled acrylics to moss-covered fingertips and sculpted claws.

The democratization of nail art has allowed for creative expression to flourish across time and space. What was once considered a luxury reserved for the elite has now become accessible for daily wear, blurring the lines between luxury and everyday accessory. Artists like Lauren Michelle Pires, who works with designer brands such as Loewe and Miu Miu, bring a designer’s approach to nail art, creating intricate and pristine designs that capture beauty in unique ways.

As nail design continues to evolve, it serves as a form of self-expression and identity assertion for many. Each fingernail becomes a canvas for creating an extension of self, signifying resistance, and connecting with the world. Long nails, in particular, have become a part of one’s identity, as identifiable as one’s skin color or laughter.

“Fresh Sets” offers a glimpse into the world of contemporary nail art and celebrates the diversity and creativity of artists around the world. Whether it’s intricate designs inspired by nature or bold, avant-garde creations, nail art continues to push boundaries and challenge traditional notions of beauty.
