Wildfires have become an increasingly common occurrence around the world, fueled by rising temperatures and ecosystem imbalances caused by the climate crisis. Brazil, in particular, has experienced a record number of hot spots this year, surpassing 180,000 as of mid-September—the highest since 2010. The devastating cycle of drought and wildfires has been exacerbated by deforestation, which reduces rainfall and further intensifies the impact of the blazes.

In response to the alarming increase in uncontrolled wildfires, renowned artist Eduardo Kobra embarked on a new series of artworks aimed at drawing attention to this urgent issue. Selecting a local area in Araçariguama, just over 30 miles from São Paulo, that had been ravaged by flames, Kobra documented a collection of temporary interventions to highlight the destruction caused by the fires.

Using biodegradable materials, Kobra created cutout panels depicting various wildlife species, including birds, monkeys, and anteaters, surrounded by scorched forest. Each piece serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of wildfires on the natural habitats and creatures they engulf. In one artwork, a firefighter is depicted assisting a baby jaguar, while in another, a child is shown watering a sprouting plant—a symbol of hope amidst the devastation.

Known for his large-scale murals that feature vibrant portraits and geometric patterns inspired by pop culture, Kobra’s smaller-scale interventions in response to the wildfires offer a more intimate and focused exploration of the environmental crisis at hand. Through his art, he not only raises awareness about the immediate threats posed by wildfires but also underscores the importance of taking action to protect our planet and its precious ecosystems.
