As we kick off the summer season, temperatures are set to soar across the country, with some regions expected to surpass 30 degrees in the upcoming week. Meteorologist Chris Brandolino from NIWA predicts that the eastern parts of both islands will experience the hottest weather.

Starting as early as Monday, temperatures will climb well into the 20s, with Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday likely to see temperatures hitting 30 degrees or higher in areas like Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury, Marlborough, and parts of interior Otago. Even regions like Waikato, Auckland, and Northland can expect temperatures in the 20s multiple times this week, making heat a dominant theme in the first week of summer.

Brandolino warns of increased chances of wet weather in the second week of December, particularly favoring western areas of both islands with potential heavy rainfall. While the North Island may experience sustained warmth during this period, heavy rain could impact various parts of the country.

Looking ahead to mid-December and beyond, Brandolino anticipates a shift towards more settled weather patterns. Moving into January and February, La Niña-like conditions may bring more rain events, contributing to an overall warmer-than-average summer.

With the upcoming hot temperatures, Brandolino highlights the heightened risk of wildfires, especially in dry, low humidity, and gusty wind conditions. He advises caution for those planning outdoor activities, urging vigilance and proper safety measures to prevent fires.

Stay informed and stay safe as we embrace the summer season ahead!
