Authorities are reporting that 19 individuals are unaccounted for and are feared dead following a catastrophic explosion that devastated a bomb manufacturing facility in Tennessee on Friday.
The explosion occurred around 7:45 a.m. local time at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant, situated near the Hickman-Humphreys County line, not far from Nashville.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis stated that while there are confirmed fatalities, specific numbers are not available. He referred to the missing workers as âsouls,â noting they were inside the building when the explosion occurred.
âThere are no words to describe it. Itâs erased,â Davis remarked. âThis is the most devastating scene I’ve witnessed in my career.â
The blast decimated âone entire buildingâ on the McEwen property, according to Davis. The factory, which specializes in creating and testing military-grade explosives, is located in a remote area, away from residential neighborhoods and commercial enterprises.
Visuals from the site reveal that the building has been entirely destroyed, leaving behind only charred debris and mangled vehicle frames.
The explosion took place in the Melt Pour building, where explosive substances are melted and deposited into canisters, as reported by an employee to The Tennessean.
Once filled, the canisters are boxed and stacked on pallets for transport. Accurate Energetic Systems handles contracts for both governmental and non-governmental clients.
Typically, the Melt Pour building accommodates fewer than 30 employees at any given time, according to sources.
19 workers were in the building during the incident, and none have been accounted for, as confirmed by Humphreys County EMA Director Odell Poyner.
Bates noted that at least 13 individuals remain unaccounted for.
The precise cause of the explosion is under investigation, with officials stating it may take several days to ascertain the circumstances leading to this calamity.
âWeâre taking the necessary time to address this situation. Our focus is on supporting the affected families and handling this with compassion,â he emphasized.
Security footage from a nearby residence, located 21 miles away, captured the moment a loud âboomâ reverberated throughout the area, powerful enough to tremble the ground and camera, as noted by News Channel 5.
Reports indicate that tremors were felt as far away as an hour’s drive.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives [ATF] has been dispatched to the site.
Emergency responders were initially unable to access the plant due to continuing detonations, but were able to secure the area by early Friday afternoon.
Officials are advising the public to steer clear of the vicinity while investigators remain on-site for the next several days.
According to its website, Accurate Energetic Systems has been a presence in the industry since 1980, describing itself as âa leader in the energetics and explosives field.â
âWhether serving military acquisition offices, defense contractors, or commercial demolition sectors, AES aims to provide superior energetic solutions,â the company claims on its website.
McEwen, known for its annual National Banana Pudding Festival, is a quiet rural area in Tennessee.
This tragic explosion marks not the first such incident for the small town; in 2014, an explosion at Rio Ammunition resulted in one fatality and three additional injuries during cartridge loading operations.
The earlier incident was ruled an accident.
