Chaos erupted at the renowned Santa Monica Pier on Sunday night when gunfire broke out during a tumultuous altercation, wounding two individuals and causing panic among the crowds.
The Santa Monica Police Department responded swiftly, arriving at the busy tourist hotspot around 9 p.m. following reports of shots fired on the pier.
According to authorities, the gunfire erupted after a confrontation involving several people quickly escalated into a larger brawl.
A video circulating on social media captures the alarming moment the shooting commenced.
In the footage, shared by professional skater Dave Johnson, the camera initially focuses on a child playing a Dance Dance Revolution arcade game.
Suddenly, multiple gunshots are heard, prompting those nearby to panic as the camera swings towards several adults, including a man in a hoodie and a woman, amidst the unfolding chaos.
In the video, witnesses can be seen fleeing the area as the sound of gunfire reverberates across the crowded pier.
Police confirmed that two people were hit during the incident.
Both victims sustained injuries described by authorities as non-life-threatening. They received initial treatment at the scene from emergency responders before being transported to a nearby hospital. Their identities have not yet been disclosed by officials.
Investigators have not confirmed the cause of the altercation, although initial signs suggest the incident might have been “gang related” or a targeted attack.
Following the shooting, officers swarmed the pier, with police vehicles and flashing lights surrounding the area as authorities worked to secure the scene.
Officials also cautioned that parts of the pier might remain temporarily closed while detectives continue their investigation.
As of Monday morning, law enforcement had not announced any arrests or identified any suspects related to the shooting.
