Dealing with EV Charging Rage: Tesla Introduces Virtual Queuing System

Road rage has long been a common occurrence on our streets, but a newer phenomenon known as EV charging rage is beginning to surface. This is the frustration that arises when a fellow EV owner cuts the line to grab one of the only working charge ports.

This issue has become prevalent enough that altercations between EV drivers have been shared on social media platforms and forums. In a shocking turn of events, the EV charging rage even escalated to a deadly incident in one case.

In response to the rising incidents of EV charging rage, particularly after a physical altercation broke out at a crowded Supercharger station, Tesla recently announced a new initiative. In a post on X, Tesla revealed plans to launch virtual queuing pilots at select sites in the second quarter.

The goal of this virtual queuing system is to improve the overall customer experience, particularly in cases where there may be a wait time for charging. While the post does not directly address the widespread issue of wait times or acknowledge that Tesla owners have been advocating for a queue system, it does mention the possibility of a wider rollout later this year based on positive feedback.

According to Tesla’s X post, the company is also committed to expanding its charging network by over 20% each year to meet the growing demand at various sites. However, it remains unclear whether drivers of EVs from other manufacturers will have access to this queue system initially.

Various automakers, including GM, Ford, Nissan, and Lucid, have already gained access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. It will be interesting to see how this virtual queuing system will be implemented and whether it will help alleviate the tensions and conflicts arising from EV charging rage.
