GM’s Electric Vehicle Success: Learning from Tesla

General Motors (GM) has been making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market recently. From initially only offering the Chevy Bolt, GM now boasts a lineup of 17 fully electrified vehicles, propelling them to second place in the U.S. EV market, just behind Tesla.

So, how did GM achieve this success? One key factor can be attributed to the influence of Jon McNeil, a GM board member and former president of Tesla during a pivotal period in the company’s growth, particularly during the development and launch of the Model 3.

McNeil shared insights into Tesla’s success, highlighting a unique approach to product meetings that was inspired by a conversation between Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk and the late Steve Jobs. Musk was advised by Jobs to focus on creating a perfect product, emphasizing the importance of product quality and design in driving sales.

At Tesla, product meetings were conducted without slides, with an emphasis on reviewing the actual product rather than mockups. This practice fostered a culture of innovation and attention to detail, with a focus on surprising and delighting customers. For example, features like the “fart button” in Tesla cars showcased the company’s commitment to creativity and user experience.

Furthermore, Tesla prioritized minimalism in product design, ensuring that functions were easily accessible within a few taps on the screen. This approach, coupled with a relentless focus on product excellence, helped Tesla maintain its innovative edge as it grew.

McNeil noted that the culture of rigorous product reviews at Tesla had a lasting impact on him, leading him to implement similar practices at GM after joining the company’s board in 2022. Under the leadership of CEO Mary Barra and President Mark Reuss, GM now conducts weekly product reviews where the emphasis is on experiencing the actual product, whether it’s hardware or software.

By adopting Tesla’s philosophy of prioritizing product excellence and innovation, GM has successfully introduced 17 EVs and solidified its position as a key player in the EV market. The company’s commitment to product development and quality has resonated with consumers, driving GM’s success in the competitive EV landscape.
