Tragic Mistaken Identity Shooting on Christmas Day in Houston
On Christmas Day in Houston, a Texas father mistakenly shot and killed an innocent Amazon manager, Desmond Butler, after believing he was his daughter’s kidnapper. The incident unfolded at a Shell gas station in Houston, where Jonathan Ross Mata, 39, fired shots at a fleeing SUV, resulting in Butler’s tragic death.
The chain of events began when Mata and his wife received a distressing call from their daughter, who claimed she had been attacked by her boyfriend. Believing that their daughter would be dropped off at the gas station, Mata and his wife arrived at the scene, where they encountered a vehicle resembling their daughter’s boyfriend’s car.
Surveillance footage shows Mata’s wife chasing the vehicle on foot, leading to Mata firing shots at the SUV driven by Butler. Unfortunately, Butler lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a pole. Despite realizing their mistake, Mata and his wife left the scene, only to turn themselves in later.
Desmond Butler, who had moved to Houston to work at Amazon, tragically lost his life in the shooting. His family, devastated by his death, is seeking answers and justice for the senseless tragedy that occurred on Christmas Day.
Mata has been charged with murder in connection to the incident and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 25. The family of Desmond Butler is mourning the loss of a beloved member who was described as a “light of joy” in their lives.
