Rep. Sylvester Turner, Texas Democrat, Passes Away
It is with great sadness that fellow House Democrats and the office of Rep. Sylvester Turner announce his passing. The first-term Texas Democrat, who succeeded the late Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in 2024, has left behind a legacy of service and dedication to public service.
News of Turner’s death was shared with colleagues in a closed-door leadership meeting on Wednesday morning. His office later released a statement expressing profound sadness at the loss, noting that Turner is survived by his family, staff, and many friends who valued his wisdom, humor, and unwavering commitment to serving the public.
Several Democrats, including Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), have publicly expressed their condolences, recognizing Turner’s contributions as both Mayor of Houston and Representative for Texas’ 18th Congressional District.
Turner, aged 70, had battled bone cancer and had undergone treatment in 2022. Despite his health struggles, he had declared himself cancer-free and continued his work in Congress.
Under Texas law, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott will be responsible for calling a special election to fill Turner’s seat. There is no set deadline for this process, but if called, all candidates will be listed on the primary ballot, with a possible runoff if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.
Turner’s passing is a loss for the state of Texas and the nation as a whole. His contributions to public service and his dedication to his constituents will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
