In a troubling incident that unfolded late Friday night, a police officer from Alvarado, Texas, sustained a neck injury in what authorities are describing as an ambush involving armed assailants outside the ICE Prairieland Detention Center, situated just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Multiple suspects have since been apprehended, and the injured officer has been transported to a local hospital for treatment before being released.

The Texas Municipal Police Association reported that the officer was “possibly ambushed during a protest-related incident” near the federal facility.

An Alvarado officer was shot this morning (sic)—possibly ambushed during a protest-related incident near a federal detention facility. Our member was airlifted. Stable condition. TMPA Attorney Lance Wyatt responded to be with our member. A daily reminder: Every shift carries risk. This job is never routine. We stand with our member and every Texas cop who runs toward danger.

According to a report from CBS News, the incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Alvarado police received a call regarding a suspicious individual in the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane, near the ICE Prairieland Detention Facility. Upon arrival, officers identified a person carrying what appeared to be a firearm.

When one of the initial responding officers attempted to engage this individual, an unknown number of suspects opened fire, resulting in at least one bullet striking the officer in the neck. The wounded officer was subsequently airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital for treatment and later released, according to Alvarado police.

As for the perpetrators, a federal law enforcement source informed CBS News that local authorities arrested eight individuals, some of whom were reportedly donning body armor. Initial reports indicated that a group of over a dozen masked individuals, dressed in black, arrived at the detention facility late Friday night, engaging in vandalism against vehicles and security cameras in the vicinity. Interestingly, the group also set off fireworks, seemingly to draw law enforcement attention.

A press release from the Alvarado Police Department elaborated on the sequence of events, stating that officers responded to a report regarding a suspicious individual around 10:56 p.m. They observed someone who seemed to be armed, prompting the first officer’s attempt to engage. This led to multiple suspects opening fire, resulting in the officer’s neck injury.

After the attack, the suspects attempted to flee but were intercepted by officers from the Alvarado Police Department, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, and other nearby agencies, who managed to apprehend several armed suspects. The motivations behind their actions remain unclear.

The Alvarado Police Department has expressed gratitude towards local agencies, the Sheriff’s office, the Texas Rangers, and federal law enforcement for their ongoing support in this matter. They have also encouraged anyone with information related to the incident to reach out to their criminal investigations division at (817) 790-0910.
