Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers is facing uncertainty for the upcoming game against Louisiana-Monroe this weekend, as coach Steve Sarkisian disclosed on Monday.

Ewers sustained a strained oblique during the second quarter of the Longhorns’ dominant 56-7 victory over UTSA. He had to exit the game early and did not return, paving the way for redshirt freshman Arch Manning to step in and showcase his skills with four touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. Manning could potentially make his first career start this Saturday if Ewers is not able to play.

Prior to his injury, Ewers had been excelling on the field, boasting a career-best 73.4% completion rate this season along with 691 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. He was also averaging an impressive 8.7 yards per attempt. Ewers was even considered the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy according to BetMGM before the setback.

Sarkisian described Ewers’ injury as non-contact, occurring as he threw a corner route for a 49-yard completion to Gunnar Helm. Despite attempting to soldier on, Ewers eventually had to be sidelined after realizing the discomfort was persisting.

In the event that Ewers is unable to play, it would mark the third consecutive season that he has missed a game due to injury. He sat out three games in 2022 due to a clavicle injury and missed two games last year with an AC joint sprain.

Sarkisian emphasized that they will be monitoring Ewers’ condition on a day-to-day basis and assessing his recovery progress. The coach expressed confidence in Ewers’ dedication to rehabilitation, highlighting his commitment to staying focused and prepared for his return to the field.

Reflecting on Manning’s performance against UTSA, where he completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards, Sarkisian commended the young quarterback for his poise and decision-making. Manning demonstrated the ability to make sound choices and effectively distribute the ball to his targets.

As they await Ewers’ status, the coaching staff plans to adjust Manning’s practice regimen with the first team. Additionally, true freshman Trey Owens, who made his debut against UTSA, will receive increased opportunities in practice. Owens is poised to serve as Manning’s backup if Ewers is sidelined for the upcoming game.

With the quarterback situation uncertain, the Longhorns will need to adapt and prepare diligently for their upcoming matchup against Louisiana-Monroe. The team remains focused on maximizing their potential and overcoming any challenges that may arise on the field.
