A Texas man accused of multiple counts of sexual assault against a child has managed to avoid prosecution on nine felony charges by striking a plea deal with a prosecutor in Travis County, who is reportedly backed by George Soros. Richard Leigh Bell, 37, was indicted on serious charges including continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14, aggravated sexual assault of a child, and indecency with a child. However, these charges were dropped in exchange for Bell pleading guilty to one count of injury to a child, a third-degree felony.
As part of the plea deal, Bell was sentenced to five years of deferred probation. Despite being required to register as a sex offender and having restrictions placed on him to prevent contact with the victim, her family, or any minors, Bell will not serve any time in jail. This decision has left the victim’s father feeling blindsided and outraged, as he expected a harsher punishment for Bell.
In Texas, deferred adjudication allows defendants to avoid a conviction if they successfully complete probation, but any violation can result in sentencing on the original charge. Bell will have to adhere to the probation conditions, including mandatory sex offender registration and no-contact restrictions, for the entire five-year term.
Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza, who took office in 2021 with the support of progressive billionaire Soros, has faced criticism for his handling of criminal cases and his focus on prosecuting police officers. Critics argue that his policies have not prioritized victims and have made the city less safe. Garza has defended his approach, stating that he is working to reform the criminal justice system by prioritizing treatment over incarceration for nonviolent drug offenses.
Despite the controversy surrounding Garza’s tenure, he remains committed to his vision of criminal justice reform. However, his decisions, such as the plea deal for Richard Leigh Bell, continue to spark debate and raise concerns about the effectiveness of his approach.
