A former Texas special education teacher and ex-clown, James Paul Anderson, tragically collapsed in a courtroom just moments before he was set to receive a lengthy prison sentence for the murder of his wife, Victoria Anderson.
The 39-year-old Anderson experienced a medical emergency at the Criminal Justice Center in Houston on Friday, where he faced a potential 35-year prison sentence for the fatal shooting of his 34-year-old spouse, Victoria, in September 2023, as reported by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
According to Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen, initial information indicated that the defendant ingested drugs while awaiting sentencing and was subsequently rushed to a hospital by ambulance. Rosen posted on X.
A bailiff administered naloxone, a life-saving medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, before Anderson was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 a.m.
As investigations ensued following this shocking incident, sources informed KHOU that Anderson’s attorney discovered a brown bag containing a crystal-like substance, which is suspected to be methamphetamine, discarded in a nearby trash container.
The judge swiftly closed the courtroom, marking it as a potential crime scene.
<pWitnesses recounted that the former clown, known by the persona "Mister Jazzz", briefly conversed with his defense lawyer upon arriving at court, after which he requested a moment alone. Shortly thereafter, he was seen spitting something into the trash can.
Minutes later, he began to vomit.
An autopsy is currently underway to ascertain the specific cause of death.
Anderson, who previously taught special education at Cleveland Independent School District, was arrested following a standoff with law enforcement on September 24, 2023. Police were dispatched to their Kingwood residence after Victoria made a 911 call reporting that her husband was threatening to shoot her. During the call, the dispatcher heard gunfire in the background, as police later stated.
Anderson allowed the couple’s three-year-old son to exit the home when the police arrived, but then barricaded himself inside with Victoria’s deceased body until he surrendered approximately five hours later. Reports indicated that there had been previous instances of domestic issues at the residence, and notably, Victoria had filed for divorce about a month prior to her death.
