Fashion design programs at top universities around the world are known for pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation. The Royal College of Art (RCA) in London is one such institution, where designers are encouraged to explore new methodologies and collaborations to redefine fashion as we know it. According to Zowie Broach, head of the MA Fashion program at RCA, the designers here are brave and unafraid to break old systems to create new ones.

One of the key aspects that sets RCA apart is its focus on individual vision and the future of fashion. Students are encouraged to think deeply about what their work offers to others and how it can shape the industry. Broach emphasizes the importance of choosing materials thoughtfully and showcasing the specificity of the human body in design.

Alumni of RCA speak highly of their experience at the institution. Saul Nash, an eponymous designer, credits Broach for encouraging him to embrace his unique perspective within his work. Jingwei Yin, designer and founder of Oude Waag, praises Broach for urging her to infuse her Western education with her own cultural roots, leading to a more authentic creative process.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia, offers a comprehensive fashion program with a focus on design, textile development, accessories, and marketing. SCAD is renowned for its top-notch facilities, industry connections, and a culture that nurtures forward-thinking and visually ambitious work.

The university’s Fibers program is a standout feature, with dedicated studios for weaving, digital textile printing, and material innovation using cutting-edge technology. SCAD also has a strong track record of producing talent in footwear and accessories, with graduates landing positions at major fashion brands like Thom Browne and Marc Jacobs.

For students considering SCAD, the university offers a well-resourced and industry-connected pathway into the fashion world. The entry requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, a portfolio showcasing creative work, and English-language proficiency for international students.

In terms of fees, SCAD charges $42,165 per annum for all students. The university is best known for its BFA programs in Fashion Design, Accessory Design, Textiles, and Fashion Marketing and Management, as well as MA programs in Fashion Design and Accessory Design.

Notable alumni from SCAD include Christopher John Rogers, Kate Barton, JosĂ© Criales-Unzueta, Julian Robaire, Kan Ando, and Trish Andersen. These graduates have made significant contributions to the fashion industry, showcasing the impact of SCAD’s rigorous and innovative curriculum.

In conclusion, both RCA and SCAD offer unique and valuable opportunities for aspiring fashion designers to hone their craft, push boundaries, and make a mark in the ever-evolving world of fashion. Whether in London or Atlanta, students can expect to be challenged, inspired, and supported in their creative journey towards a successful career in the fashion industry.
