Photographed by Ruth Ginika Ossai
While the Met Gala’s red carpet garners much attention, only a select few have the privilege of capturing moments inside the museum. This year, photographer Ruth Ginika Ossai was among those granted access to create a unique series of portraits within the hallowed halls.
Renowned for her vibrant and textured images that celebrate Black culture and identity, Ossai brought her distinctive visual style to the prestigious event. Hailing from Eastern Nigeria and currently residing in West Yorkshire, England, she proudly embraces her Igbo/Yorkshire heritage, infusing her work with a sense of strength and clarity. Her portraits exude a sense of reverence, drawing inspiration from Nigerian studio photography traditions and elevating her subjects to legendary status.
Adding her own creative flair to the Met Gala setting, Ossai incorporated props and painted sets to create a slightly surreal ambiance. From 1970s-style vinyl flooring to enchanting forest backdrops, her staging transformed the museum into a dynamic space for self-expression.
Guests such as Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Zendaya eagerly participated in Ossai’s portraits, drawn to her unique vision and the opportunity to create something intimate amidst the grandeur of the event. Rihanna proudly displayed her baby bump, while A$AP Rocky and Lewis Hamilton struck powerful poses against whimsical backgrounds.
According to Ossai, storytelling is essential for authentic representation. In this series, she offers a fresh perspective on the Met Gala experience, emphasizing personal narratives and the art of self-expression amidst the opulence of the event.
