The Rise of Assembly-Based Political Movements

Last month, I issued an ultimatum to the readers of The Ecologist online. I asked for 100 volunteers to sign up for a mini-assembly, and to my surprise, we had 200 people step up. This overwhelming response is a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of grassroots movements in shaping our future.

Individual actions may seem small, but they are essential components of the democratic wave of change we are striving to create. Assemblies, where communities come together to discuss and strategize, have a long history of driving political transformation. They are not just a passing trend, but a proven method of enacting meaningful change.

In a world saturated with information and countless ideas, the concept of assemblies may seem like just another buzzword. However, their significance lies in their ability to mobilize people, inspire collective action, and challenge the status quo. Assemblies have been instrumental in movements like the Mondragon Cooperative and the Rojava Revolution, showcasing their effectiveness in driving social and political change.

I have always believed that the devil is in the details, and this holds true for revolutionary assemblies. It’s not just about coming together for a discussion; it’s about meticulous planning, strategic sequencing, and a clear pathway towards systemic change. We need to move beyond sporadic conversations and embrace organized, purposeful assemblies that can lead us towards a more just and equitable society.

The Future of Political Movements

In 2018, I predicted that massive civil disobedience on climate issues would occur within two years. While this prediction may not have been a certainty, it highlighted the readiness of society for a radical shift. The success of movements like Extinction Rebellion in 2019 proved that when the right seeds are planted, real change can happen.

Looking ahead, I foresee assembly-based political parties becoming the defining movement of the next five years in Western democracies. The groundwork has been laid, the context is ripe for transformation, and the time is now for us to embrace a new way of political engagement.

As we navigate through a period of chaos and uncertainty, assemblies offer a beacon of hope. They provide a structured, organized platform for dialogue, collaboration, and action. By harnessing the power of collective decision-making, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and equitable future.
