ZF: Your work often incorporates mathematical concepts and geometric patterns. How do these elements influence your weaving process and the final visual outcome?

MS: I’ve always been interested in math, and I think that interest naturally seeps into my work. My background as a math teacher definitely plays a role in how I approach weaving. I enjoy creating patterns and designs that are visually captivating but also have some underlying mathematical complexity.

When I weave, I often start with a basic geometric pattern and then build upon it, adding layers of complexity to create a visually dynamic piece. I also enjoy exploring the relationship between math and art, and weaving provides the perfect medium for me to express that connection.

Overall, incorporating mathematical concepts into my work allows me to push the boundaries of traditional Navajo weaving and create pieces that are both visually striking and intellectually engaging.

ZF: How has your cultural heritage as a Diné weaver influenced your artistic practice and the themes you explore in your work?

MS: My cultural heritage is at the core of everything I do as an artist. Being a Diné weaver has shaped the themes I explore in my work and the techniques I use in my practice. I draw inspiration from traditional Navajo weaving styles and motifs, but I also push the boundaries of those traditions to create pieces that are uniquely my own.

My cultural heritage also influences the stories I tell through my work. I often draw on Diné mythology, history, and symbolism to create pieces that reflect the richness and complexity of Diné culture. I see weaving as a way to preserve and celebrate my cultural heritage while also pushing it forward into new and exciting directions.

Ultimately, my cultural heritage as a Diné weaver is not just a part of my artistic practice—it is the foundation upon which all of my work is built.

Marilou Schultz’s innovative approach to weaving and her exploration of mathematical concepts have earned her recognition in both the Native art community and the contemporary art world. Through her unique blend of tradition and experimentation, she continues to push the boundaries of Navajo weaving and create pieces that are both visually stunning and intellectually engaging.

As she continues to explore new technologies and techniques in her work, Marilou Schultz remains a trailblazer in the world of contemporary Native art. Her commitment to innovation and her dedication to preserving and celebrating her cultural heritage make her a truly remarkable artist whose work will undoubtedly continue to inspire and captivate audiences for years to come.

Marilou Schultz, a Diné weaver, is known for her innovative approach to traditional weaving techniques. One of her most famous pieces is a microchip design that she created in collaboration with Intel in 1996. The project was part of a conference on “Weaving and Technology” organized by Louis Baca, an Intel employee. The goal was to create a weaving that reflected modern technology while honoring traditional Diné craftsmanship.

When Marilou first saw the intricate design of the microchip, she was initially overwhelmed. She had never attempted such a complex and abstract pattern before. However, she was determined to take on the challenge. She focused on replicating the natural tones of the original design and worked on adapting her weaving technique to create the interlocking vertical patterns required for the chip design.

To manage the complexity of the project, Marilou divided the design into 64 sections and relied on measurements and eyesight to map each section directly onto the weaving. She also had to work with various shades to create depth and contrast in the piece. Despite the challenges, she was able to complete the weaving in time for the conference.

When the weaving was unveiled at the conference, engineering students were fascinated by the design. They recognized specific parts of the chip and added a new layer of understanding to the piece for Marilou. This experience highlighted the intersection of art, technology, and culture in her work.

Marilou’s role as a math teacher also influences her weaving practice. She sees mathematical structures and patterns in both math problems and weaving, and her approach to teaching informs her artistic process. Technology plays a significant role in her work, allowing her to merge tradition with modern materials and techniques. She is always looking for new ways to challenge herself and incorporate innovative elements into her weavings.

In her recent work on display at Kunstverein München, Marilou references both AI and the Diné creation story of Na’ashjé’íí Asdzáá (Spider Woman). She continues to explore the intersection of tradition and modernity in her art, using technology as a tool to create new visual experiences. By pushing the boundaries of traditional weaving techniques, Marilou Schultz continues to redefine the art form and honor her cultural heritage in a contemporary context. Traditionally, wearing blankets served a functional purpose for Native peoples. However, as fashion evolves, so too can Native wearable art. This concept inspired me to experiment with metallic thread to make the blankets shimmer, bridging the gap between old forms and contemporary aesthetics.

Similarly, with my circuit board-inspired pieces, I continue to push the boundaries of traditional weaving. While wool has been a staple material for me, I constantly explore new materials to enhance realism in my art. For instance, if an image features aluminum, I use metallic thread to mimic that effect, blurring the lines between traditional techniques and modern innovation.

In the exhibition “Woven Histories,” Diné weavings take center stage, offering East Coast visitors a glimpse into the rich tradition of Diné textiles. For those encountering a textile by a Diné artist for the first time, it’s important to understand the foundational techniques that have been passed down through generations. The upright vertical loom, the batten, and the weaving comb are all tools that remain unchanged, showcasing the timeless artistry of Diné weaving.

While the technical aspects of weaving have remained consistent, the artistic expression within the craft has evolved over time. As a Diné weaver, I aim to honor the traditional techniques while infusing my work with contemporary designs and concepts. This evolution is driven by experimentation and intentionality, as I carefully select materials that serve a specific purpose in each piece.

For example, in my latest piece inspired by a circuit or chip design, I integrated aluminum to capture a specific shimmer and sparkle. This intentional material choice reflects my commitment to staying true to tradition while embracing the influences of the modern world. Through my art, I strive to convey a balance between tradition and innovation, drawing inspiration from both the natural elements and technological advancements that shape our world.

Ultimately, I hope viewers will take away a deeper appreciation for the intricate artistry and cultural significance of Diné weaving. By blending tradition with innovation, I aim to showcase the resilience and creativity of Indigenous artists, ensuring that our heritage continues to thrive in a modern world. The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the way we live, work, and communicate. With the rise of smartphones, social media, and artificial intelligence, our world has become more interconnected and convenient than ever before.
