Readers may recall our previous coverage of the recent elections in the Netherlands, where Geert Wilders’ PVV party emerged as the victor. Yet, in a move reminiscent of a political game of chicken, mainstream parties established a “firewall,” unequivocally stating they would only join a coalition if Wilders was excluded from the role of Prime Minister.
Fast forward 299 days—yes, that’s not a typo—and a coalition government finally took shape, albeit with former Intelligence chief Dick Schoof stepping into the role of Premier.
However, it quickly became clear that this new government was falling short of the expectations that Wilders had set, failing to deliver on the mandates that the Dutch electorate had voted for.
On the 26th, Wilders unveiled a bold 10-point plan aiming to drastically reduce migration, which includes deploying the military to safeguard national borders and an outright ban on accepting asylum seekers.
According to a report by the Associated Press:
“The proposals exacerbate tensions within the already fractious four-party ruling coalition hastily assembled after Wilders’ Party for Freedom triumphed in the 2023 Dutch elections on a platform promising significant cuts to migration.”
“The gloves are off,” Wilders declared, warning that should migration policies not be tightened, his party would withdraw from the Cabinet.

Throughout his career, Wilders has been a vocal advocate for stringent policies against radical Islam and mass migration to the Netherlands.
His patience has now worn thin, following the coalition’s failure to implement a serious crackdown on immigration.
“He proposes a temporary suspension of family reunifications for asylum seekers who have been granted refugee status and advocates for the repatriation of Syrians who have either applied for asylum or are currently residing in the Netherlands on temporary visas, citing that much of Syria is now safe. Additionally, he insists that migrants convicted of violent or sexual offenses should face deportation, proposing a “one strike and you’re out” rule.
Wilders noted that some of these measures have already been adopted by other European countries, including Germany, while others may necessitate the Netherlands’ departure from existing European conventions.

“Wilders expressed frustration at the lack of tangible actions since the coalition agreed to measures in October, which included the re-introduction of border checks and restrictions on family members eligible for reunification with those granted asylum in the Netherlands. He remarked that the previously agreed measures are insufficient to effect real change.”
