The shocking and gruesome tale that the director of “The Mortician” chose to leave out of the HBO series has finally been revealed. The series, based on the true story of David Sconce, a cremator who committed unspeakable acts with human remains, delved into the disturbing world of a mortuary run amok.
David Sconce, the great-grandson of the mortuary’s founder, took over the family business after a football injury shattered his dreams of playing professionally. Motivated by a desire to boost profits, Sconce resorted to despicable actions such as incinerating multiple bodies in the same chamber. This led to grieving families receiving not only the remains of their loved ones but also those of other individuals.
Aside from cremating multiple bodies at once, Sconce was accused of theft, including selling gold jewelry and dental fillings from corpses, as well as hiring hitmen to attack business rivals and mutilating bodies. The case was a chilling reminder of the depths of human depravity.
The HBO series shed light on the case through interviews with those involved, including Sconce himself. In an attempt to justify his actions, Sconce callously remarked, “I don’t put any value on anybody after they’re gone and dead.” His lack of remorse and twisted logic only added to the horror of the case.
Director Joshua Rofé, in a recent interview, admitted that the series had left him shaken, declaring, “I don’t want to be cremated. I know that for sure.” The horrors of the case were so numerous that some, like the disturbing incident involving the discovery of a baby’s corpse in a cold storage room, couldn’t even be included in the series.
Louis Quinones, a former driver for Sconce’s mortuary, recounted the harrowing moment when he stumbled upon the tiny body hidden beneath a blanket. The revelation that he had unknowingly delivered the infant’s ashes to the child’s mother weeks earlier added another layer of horror to an already macabre tale.
Sconce’s crimes eventually caught up with him, and he was sentenced to five years in prison in 1989 for mutilating corpses, among other offenses. Despite being released early in 1991, he would later be sentenced to 25 years to life in 2013 for violating probation. In 2023, he was released on parole, a chilling reminder of the darkness that lurks within the human soul.
The twisted tale of David Sconce and his mortuary of horrors serves as a cautionary reminder of the depths of human depravity and the importance of upholding respect and dignity for the deceased. The HBO series, while shedding light on a dark chapter in history, only scratches the surface of the true horrors that unfolded within the walls of Sconce’s mortuary.
