MGM+ has officially greenlit an eight-episode drama series based on the iconic Western film, “The Magnificent Seven.” The series, set to begin production in June 2026, is being developed by writer Tim Kring, known for his work on “Heroes” and “Touch,” along with executive producers Donald De Line, Lawrence Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman.
The show will explore the story of a group of mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village in the 1880s American frontier after it is attacked by a land baron’s hired guns. As the mercenaries interact with the Quakers, they must grapple with the moral dilemma of using violence to defend a people whose faith is based on nonviolence. Each member of the Seven will be delved into, revealing their motivations and the stakes involved in taking on this mission.
“The Magnificent Seven,” originally directed by John Sturges and featuring stars like Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, is considered a classic Western film. The 1960 movie has spawned sequels, a remake, and a TV series that aired in the late 1990s to early 2000s.
MGM+ head Michael Wright praised Tim Kring as a master storyteller and commended the team for crafting a series that captures the essence of a classic Western while honoring the legacy of the original film. The themes of unity against oppression and flawed heroes seeking redemption by aiding the helpless will be central to the new adaptation.
Produced by MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios, the series promises to deliver the energy of the original film while exploring timeless themes that resonate with modern audiences. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new project inspired by a beloved Western classic.
