Venture capital fundraising can often seem like a mysterious process, with investors working behind closed doors to secure funds. However, it’s crucial for investors to approach their fundraising strategy with the same level of thought and planning as they do when helping their portfolio companies find success in the market.
On the latest episode of Build Mode, we shift our focus from advising founders on marketing strategies to exploring how venture capitalists present themselves as reliable partners to founders and as attractive investments to limited partners (LPs). Isabelle Johannessen sat down with Leslie Feinzaig from Graham & Walker and Ross Fubini from XYZ Ventures to discuss their experiences raising their initial funds and how those experiences have shaped their approach to empathizing with founders navigating the fundraising process.
Feinzaig shared her journey of entering the venture capital world without many industry connections, leading her to pitch to hundreds of potential investors and ultimately secure funding from 105 LPs. She emphasized the importance of building trust and positioning herself as a valuable resource for founders seeking strategic guidance.
Similarly, Fubini highlighted the significance of evaluating potential partnerships based on three key factors: the individual, the firm, and the terms of the agreement. He stressed the importance of building strong relationships with investors who not only have the expertise and resources to support a startup but also align with the company’s values and vision for growth.
Both Feinzaig and Fubini acknowledged the shift in power dynamics from previous bear markets to the current landscape, where founders have more leverage in deal negotiations. They emphasized the need for both VCs and founders to conduct thorough due diligence and prioritize compatibility to ensure successful partnerships.
As the industry continues to evolve, Feinzaig and Fubini offer practical advice for VCs looking to stand out to founders and for founders seeking strategic investors to join their cap tables. While traditional methods like pitch decks and cold emails may have lost some of their impact, building genuine relationships and demonstrating a track record of execution remain essential for attracting the right partners.
