‘The math says this is over’: San Francisco mayor faces long reelection odds

The San Francisco mayoral race has taken an unexpected turn as early returns show Mayor London Breed trailing far behind her opponent, Daniel Lurie. Lurie, a Levi Strauss heir and nonprofit founder, has managed to outspend Breed and gain a significant lead in the city’s ranked-choice voting system.

With 56 percent of the vote compared to Breed’s 44 percent, Lurie’s victory seems almost certain. Despite the initial setback, Breed remains optimistic and has not yet conceded the election. She addressed supporters at a soul food restaurant on Tuesday night, saying, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

The city is not expected to release further results until Thursday afternoon, leaving Breed’s campaign in a state of uncertainty. Dan Newman, a consultant backing Lurie, acknowledged the challenging position Breed is in but emphasized the math behind the current standings.

Breed’s campaign has remained tight-lipped about their strategy moving forward, with a spokesperson mentioning that she is taking time to process the defeat of her friend and former mentor, Kamala Harris. However, doubts have surfaced among Breed’s allies about the possibility of a comeback given Lurie’s significant lead and the remaining uncounted ballots.

Lurie’s strong performance in the final weeks of the race, particularly in districts like the Sunset and Richmond, has solidified his position as a frontrunner. His strategic approach to garnering second-choice votes from supporters of other candidates has paid off, putting him ahead in both first-choice and second-choice ballots.

In the unique ranked-choice voting system of San Francisco, where voters can rank up to 10 candidates in order of preference, Lurie’s appeal as a second-choice option has proven to be crucial. As the city awaits the final results, Lurie refrained from declaring victory but emphasized the need for a new era of leadership focused on accountability, service, and change.

The mayoral race in San Francisco has captured the attention of many, with the outcome poised to reshape the city’s political landscape. As Breed faces an uphill battle to secure another term, the city braces for a potential shift in leadership and direction under the impending administration of Daniel Lurie.
