Democrats are exploring alternative strategies to hold the Trump administration accountable. From their experience with Trump’s first term, House Democrats have realized that impeachment was not an effective measure.

While impeachment is intended to publicly shame a president and leave a lasting mark on their record, it seems ineffective against those who lack shame.

Donald Trump and his Republican allies appear to be unaffected by shame, suggesting that even if Democrats regain control of the House and attempt a third impeachment, it might not impact him significantly.

Moreover, the public’s decision to re-elect Trump in 2024, despite his two prior impeachments, indicates that impeachment may not hold much weight for voters. In response, Democrats are contemplating a new strategy aimed at targeting members of Trump’s administration, which could prove more effective than pursuing another impeachment.

Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) has announced plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Pete Hegseth next week.

Ansari stated:

Donald Trump’s irrational remarks, including one made on Easter Sunday, are further immersing our country and the world in a devastating, unending conflict. He is threatening actions that violate U.S. law and the Geneva Convention, along with committing atrocities that have already caused extensive damage to schools, hospitals, and vital civilian infrastructure. Republicans must unite with us in urging the president to halt this self-destructive war before it is too late. The stakes are incredibly high, and those who continue to follow him blindly will bear responsibility for the consequences.

The likelihood of a significant number of Republicans joining Democrats to criticize the administration’s handling of the war is minimal, but Ansari had additional comments to share.
