The Oscar Nominees Luncheon Peaked in the ’90s

The Oscars Nominees Luncheon has evolved over the years, from a laid-back affair in the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s to a glitzy stop on the awards season campaign trail today. In the past, Hollywood stars like Steven Spielberg, Whoopi Goldberg, River Phoenix, and Frances McDormand would show up in jeans and casual attire, eschewing the traditional red carpet glamor for a more relaxed vibe. Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow opted for plush knitwear over show-stopping ballgowns, while Sofia Coppola stuck to her signature minimalist style.

Unlike the polished and meticulously styled appearances we see now, most attendees at the Oscars Nominees Luncheon back then went makeup-free, wore flats, carried their own bags, and even sported sunglasses on the low-key step-and-repeat. The atmosphere was much more casual and laid-back, with a focus on celebrating the art of filmmaking rather than the glitz and glamour of the red carpet.

As we look forward to the 2026 Oscar nominees luncheon on February 10, it’s interesting to reflect on the event’s more relaxed and down-to-earth past. While the current luncheons may be filled with designer gowns, sparkling jewels, and perfectly coiffed hair, there’s something charming about the simplicity and authenticity of the earlier years.

In a world where image and presentation are everything, it’s refreshing to remember a time when Hollywood’s biggest stars could show up in jeans and sweaters, embracing their own unique style and personality. The Oscars Nominees Luncheon may have changed over the years, but the spirit of camaraderie and celebration of talent remains the same. Here’s to honoring the past while looking towards the future of the film industry.
