The family of Congressman Gerry Connolly has announced his passing after a courageous battle with cancer. In a heartfelt statement, they reflected on his life:

“With profound sadness, we announce that our beloved father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, peacefully left us this morning, surrounded by family.”

Gerry dedicated his life to serving others, tirelessly striving to improve our community. He was a staunch advocate for those without a voice, embodying the principles of justice and equity. His legacy as a skilled diplomat on the world stage, a capable legislator in Congress, and a visionary leader on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors showcases his commitment to democracy, environmental sustainability, and mentorship. His mantra, “bloom where you are planted,” resonates throughout the many projects he championed, from the expansion of the Silver Line to enhancements at the Oakton Library, the Mosaic District, and the Cross County Trail.

For nearly four decades, we had the privilege of sharing Gerry with Northern Virginia, a testament to his joy, purpose, and passion for public service. Though his absence creates a void in our hearts, we take pride in knowing that his enduring contributions will benefit future generations. We deeply appreciate the love you all have shown him, reflecting the love he held for you in return.

On April 28, Rep. Connolly revealed the unfortunate news of his cancer’s return, announcing his decision to step down from his role as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee and his decision not to seek reelection.

Until nearly the very end, Connolly remained devoted to the people of Northern Virginia and the broader United States. His relentless advocacy for good governance and public service will be sorely missed.

Throughout his career, Rep. Connolly championed the protection of whistleblowers and pushed for investigations into corruption within the Trump administration.

At a time when public service is often perceived as a lucrative venture for the executive branch, Gerry Connolly stood as a paragon of selfless public service—a quality sorely needed in today’s political landscape. His life serves as a beacon, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps.
