Folk singer Kristy Lee recently made headlines for canceling her show at the Kennedy Center in response to the decision to give it a MAGA makeover by President Donald Trump. In a heartfelt post on her social media pages, Lee explained that while canceling shows has financial implications for her, she cannot compromise her integrity for any paycheck. As a folk singer from Alabama, she emphasized that her songs reflect her truth and no one can take that away from her.

The renaming of the Kennedy Center to “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” by a Trump-appointed board of trustees has sparked controversy among performers scheduled to appear at the center. The move has also led to a lawsuit filed by Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) against the board, arguing that such a decision required Congressional approval.

The center’s renaming has drawn criticism for its perceived political influence and self-promotion. Lee, in a statement on her website, highlighted the importance of keeping the center free from ideological pressure and upholding its values of artistic freedom and public trust. She expressed concern that using the center for personal promotion undermines the legacy of President Kennedy and erodes its dignity.

This latest development at the Kennedy Center is part of a series of controversial, MAGA-friendly moves that have seen plummeting ticket sales since Trump took office. Despite the challenges, artists like Kristy Lee continue to stand by their principles and advocate for the power of truth and artistic expression.
