The Removal Of This BLM Mural Is An Attack On Black Art

The Removal Of This BLM Mural Is An Attack On Black Art

The Trump administration continues to prioritize undermining the message that Black lives matter, as seen in its attacks on DEI initiatives, freezing of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, and hiring freezes at federal agencies. The latest target is the Black Lives Matter mural near the White House, with Mayor Muriel Bowser likely succumbing to pressure to remove it. This move, while not surprising in the current political climate, is a direct attack on Black art and the ongoing fight for racial equality.

Art has always been a powerful tool in the fight for justice and equality, with Black artists playing a central role in movements throughout history. The removal of the Black Lives Matter mural is just another attempt to erase our history and silence our voices. However, we must not allow this to deter us from continuing to fight for our rights and show the world that Black lives do matter.

Despite the administration’s efforts to diminish our power, we must remain resilient and steadfast in our activism. Our history is filled with examples of Black creativity and ingenuity in the face of adversity, from using cornrows to store seeds for survival to creating maps for safe passage. Black art has always been a beacon of hope and resistance, and the removal of one mural will only inspire us to create ten more. Our fight for freedom and equality will not be silenced by erasing a single piece of art.
