An event hosted by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, affectionately known as AOC (D-NY), took a rather unexpected turn on Friday night, as one former supporter decided she had had enough of the congresswoman’s rhetoric.
According to a report by Gothamist, AOC organized a sold-out town hall in Jackson Heights, Queens, primarily aimed at voicing her grievances against the Trump Administration. One could almost picture the audience ready to applaud on cue, a sea of nodding heads in agreement with her every statement.
However, the atmosphere quickly shifted when AOC began her presentation, complete with PowerPoint slides detailing the Trump administration’s budget cuts. Before she could even transition to her second slide, an audience member erupted with a question that caught everyone off guard.
“I am a healthcare worker and I want to know what you’re doing about the genocide in Gaza!” the woman shouted, interrupting the congresswoman.
The reaction from AOC’s supporters was swift and predictable. A chorus of “Shame! Shame! Shame!” erupted from the crowd, directed at the protester, while others expressed their discontent through boos.
Despite the backlash, the protester remained resolute, continuing to accuse AOC of betrayal regarding her stance on Israel. “Shame on you, you’re a liar! You’re a liar!” she yelled, only to be met with further hostility from the audience.
Eventually, security intervened and guided the protester out, but not before she declared, “Shame on you, I used to support you. You’re a war criminal! War criminal! War criminal!”
As the commotion subsided, AOC addressed the audience, remarking, “I more than welcome people who disagree or are super p*ssed off at me for any issue to come, but we have some ground rules here. Please wait for the Q&A, because we don’t want to deprive all of our neighbors of the ability to have information and hear them respond to it. We need to be able to have this conversation.”
