The Meshe Eco-Village: A Sustainable Community in the Heart of Lankaran

A pebble road winds its way through the forest, leading to a large house nestled on the mountainside. Made primarily of red brick and timber, this house is the centerpiece of the Meshe eco-village, a unique community set up by Murad in Dashtatuk village, Lankaran.

Murad Ibrahimov, a Talish man and former owner of the popular ETUD Cafe&Bar in Baku, made the decision to relocate to his hometown in 2019. His goal was to reconnect with nature, establish healthy living habits, and create an eco-friendly community in a serene natural setting.

Embracing Sustainability

Unlike the fast-paced urban lifestyle that many Azerbaijanis are drawn to, Murad’s vision for Meshe eco-village revolves around sustainability and self-sufficiency. The community aims to bring together five to ten families who will live and work together to make the area economically self-sustainable.

While traditional villagers have always lived in harmony with nature, Meshe is incorporating innovative energy and water-saving technologies to enhance its eco-friendly practices. The goal is to create a model community that showcases the benefits of living sustainably.

Building a Community

The success of Meshe eco-village is owed to the collaboration of friends, volunteers, and local villagers. Current residents include permanent community members and seasonal volunteers who contribute to the village’s upkeep and development.

Living under one roof and sharing responsibilities, the residents of Meshe work together towards a common goal. The community has welcomed over 200 volunteers in the past four years, with some choosing to become long-term members of the eco-village.

From biologists to creative groups, volunteers from diverse backgrounds bring valuable skills and knowledge to Meshe. In return, they gain a unique experience that fosters personal growth and community building.

With a focus on permaculture and environmental sustainability, Meshe eco-village stands as a beacon of hope for those seeking a deeper connection to nature and a more harmonious way of living.
