Defending Science in the Face of Threats
As we prepare for the outcomes of the US presidential election, the importance of independent and trustworthy science cannot be understated. The threats posed by the Trump administration to fire scientists, undermine science-based policies, and dismantle scientific agencies are real and alarming. At the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), we are committed to protecting the scientific process, scientific integrity, and the federal scientists working in the public interest.
Championing Science in Government
UCS is launching a campaign called “Save Science, Save Lives” to mobilize our network of over 17,000 scientists in support of federal scientists at risk of being pushed out or fired by the administration. We will oppose anti-science nominees and advocate for the passage of the Scientific Integrity Act to protect scientific freedom and integrity in government decisions. Our efforts will include using public comment processes, media outreach, and congressional engagement to hold the administration accountable for its actions.
Additionally, our Science Network members are actively involved in the Science Hub for Climate Litigation, providing expertise to legal cases holding oil companies accountable for climate damages.
Prior Experience and Lessons Learned
Reflecting on our experiences during the first Trump administration, we have learned valuable lessons in challenging attacks on science. From tracking over 200 attacks on science to preventing cover-ups on PFAS chemicals and particulate matter pollution, we have shown the impact of our advocacy efforts on public health and environmental protections.
By rallying supporters, documenting abuses, and pushing back on harmful policies, we have demonstrated the power of science advocacy in shaping government decisions. Moving forward, we will continue to be vigilant, creative, and collaborative in defending science and public protections.
Join the Fight for Science
We invite all science advocates to join us in supporting federal science and scientists who play a crucial role in safeguarding our environment and public health. Whether through signing up for our e-newsletter, joining the Science Network, or becoming a member of UCS, your involvement can make a difference in protecting the integrity of science in government decisions.
