In a striking display of political theater, President Trump recently took aim at ABC’s Martha Raddatz following what he deemed an inappropriate foray into political commentary during her interview with Cardinal Blase Cupich. Raddatz’s assertion that the historic election of Pope Leo XIV was “unrelated to Donald Trump” sparked an immediate backlash from the former president.
In his typical fashion, Trump criticized the program—often hosted by George Stephanopoulos—labeling it “The Slopadopolus Show,” a nod to its perceived bias and penchant for sensationalism, particularly against his administration.
Trump took to Truth Social to unleash his thoughts on the matter, referring to Raddatz as a “Trump-deranged old timer” during what was ostensibly a sacred post-conclave discussion.
He stated:
“So amusing to see old-timer Martha Raddatz on ABC Fake News (the Slopadopolus show!) this morning, suddenly declare that Pope Leo’s selection had nothing to do with Donald Trump. It seemed to come from nowhere, clearly a product of her Trump Deranged Mind.
Let’s not forget, I did WIN the Catholic Vote, and by a considerable margin! Bob Iger should reconsider the talent he’s got on his low-rated shows. Time for change. MAGA!!!”

The incident unfolded during an episode of ABC’s This Week, where Raddatz invited the ultra-liberal Cardinal Blase Cupich to discuss the implications of appointing America’s first pope. However, instead of concentrating on the religious significance of this event, Raddatz veered into the realm of politics, particularly focusing on Trump.
In what can only be described as a perplexing comment, Raddatz claimed that the Pope’s selection had no ties to Trump—an assertion that, oddly enough, had not been posited by anyone prior to her statement.
RADDATZ: And, of course, Pope Francis was deeply concerned with the plight of the poor and migrants. Pope Leo shares that concern. In some sense, will he serve as a counterbalance to what’s currently unfolding in American politics and President Trump?
CUPICH: I believe he will aid in completing and complementing our political agenda. He’ll be vocal about immigration issues as he understands the struggles faced by individuals seeking a better life.
He is also aware of the rising sea levels affecting places like Oceania, where residents are trying to escape the encroaching waters, as well as the drug trade issues in Central and South America fueled by American weapons. He realizes that these people need viable options.
He will likely advocate for, as U.S. bishops have, a resolution to our broken immigration system.
